About the Texas written test
Knowledge (written) test: 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the *Texas Driver Handbook* (DL-7), covering traffic laws, road signs, safe driving, alcohol/drugs, and distracted driving. Passing score is 21 of 30 (70%). Often taken during the driver-education classroom course; otherwise given at the driver license office.
Vision test: Required at application; standard acuity of at least 20/40 (with corrective lenses if needed).
Road (skills) test: Required for the provisional license. May be given by DPS or by an approved third-party skills-testing (TPST) driver-education provider. The applicant must supply a vehicle with current registration and insurance; results from a school come to DPS in a sealed envelope or via the online TPST portal.
Getting licensed in Texas
Learner License (Phase I): Available at ages 15–17. To apply you must have completed the required classroom portion of an approved driver-education course — either 6 hours (concurrent method) or all 24 hours (block method) — pass the written knowledge test and vision exam, and (if under 18) provide a high-school diploma/GED or a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form showing ≥90% attendance. The holder may drive only with a licensed adult 21 or older in the front passenger seat at all times. No cell-phone use of any kind (including hands-free) except emergencies. The learner license must be held at least 6 months (a suspension extends the 6-month clock day-for-day) and expires on the holder's 18th birthday.
Provisional License (Phase II): Available at ages 16–17 after (a) holding the learner license ≥6 months, (b) completing the behind-the-wheel portion of driver education, and (c) passing the road test. The behind-the-wheel portion is: 7 hours of in-car observation (watching the instructor), 7 hours of in-car driving with the instructor, and 30 hours of supervised driving practice, of which at least 10 must be at night, with a licensed driver 21+ in the vehicle. Restrictions (until 18):
Passengers: No more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member.
Curfew: No driving 12:00 a.m.–5:00 a.m. except for work, school activities, or emergencies.
