About the Ohio written test
Knowledge (written) test: 40 multiple-choice questions split into two independently scored sections — 20 road-signs and 20 road-rules. You must score at least 75% on each section (15 of 20 in each) to pass.
Vision screening: Required at application.
Road (skills) / maneuverability test: Includes a maneuverability ("cones") exercise plus on-road driving evaluating control, turns, intersections, stopping, and observation.
Getting licensed in Ohio
Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC): Available at age 15 years 6 months. Requires passing the knowledge test and a vision screening. While holding a TIPIC, a driver under 16 must have a parent, guardian, or licensed driving instructor in the front passenger seat. A driver 16 or older may drive with any licensed driver age 21+ in the front seat, except from midnight–6 a.m., when a parent/guardian (or a 21+ driver named on a notarized BMV 2438) is required.
Driver education (required for under-18): A state-licensed course of 24 hours classroom (or online) plus 8 hours behind-the-wheel driving with an instructor, and a 50-hour supervised driving log (including 10 hours at night) signed by a parent/guardian.
Probationary Driver License: Available at age 16 after holding the TIPIC at least 6 months (for under-18) and completing driver education and the 50-hour log, then passing the road skills test. First 12 months restrictions: generally no driving midnight–6 a.m. without a parent/guardian (with limited exceptions), and no more than one non-family passenger unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.
Full License: GDL restrictions lift at age 18.
