About the Mississippi written test
Knowledge (written) exam: 30 multiple-choice questions on road signs, traffic laws, and safe-driving practices from the Mississippi Driver's Manual; passing score 80% (24 of 30). All knowledge exams are taken in person — no cell phones, ear buds, smart watches, or other electronics are allowed in the testing area. Anyone caught with banned items or cheating has the test cancelled and cannot re-test for 6 months (appeals within 30 days to driversed@dps.ms.gov). The current manual was revised 1/15/2025; a printed copy costs $3.00. Mississippi has no official study app.
Vision screening: required at application (both permit and license).
Road (skills) test: Mississippi does not always administer a state road test for the standard Class R license; a parent/guardian may sign the Waiver of Road Testing Affidavit certifying the teen was tested on the required skills. A road skills test is administered in other cases (and for commercial licensing).
Getting licensed in Mississippi
Night rule: may drive unsupervised from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday–Thursday, and 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday (updated this pass — prior notes gave a flat 6 a.m.–10 p.m.). Outside those hours the driver must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other licensed driver age 21+ in the front seat. Driving directly to or from work is allowed at any hour.
The intermediate license is held at least 6 months with no moving-violation conviction before an unrestricted license can be issued.
