Getting licensed in Louisiana
Learner's Permit (Class E, Stage 1): Available at age 15 after completing a DPS-approved driver-education course. For applicants 15–17 the course is the full program: at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. (Adults 18+ may instead take a shorter 6-hour pre-licensing course.) The applicant must pass a vision (eye) test and the written knowledge test. The permit holder may drive only when supervised at all times by a licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least 21 years old, or a licensed sibling at least 18. The permit must be held a minimum of 180 days, during which the driver must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours at night.
Intermediate License (Stage 2): A 15-year-old must hold the permit at least 180 days and reach age 16; a 16-year-old must hold it at least 180 days or until age 17. Requirements: the 50 supervised hours (15 at night) completed and passing the road skills test. Restrictions: no driving between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed adult 21+ or a licensed sibling 18+; and no more than one passenger under age 21 between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed adult 21+.
Full Class E License (Stage 3): Granted at age 17 after meeting the intermediate-stage requirements. Applicants age 17 may apply for either a learner's permit or a full license directly; adults 18+ complete the standard process (driver education or the 6-hour course, tests, and a 30-day wait if they start with a permit).
