About the New York written test
Knowledge (written) test: 20 multiple-choice questions from the New York State Driver's Manual. You must answer 14 correct (70%) to pass. Four of the 20 are road-sign questions, and you must get at least 2 of those 4 correct.
Vision test: Required at application — minimum 20/40 acuity in at least one eye (with or without corrective lenses). Applicants who do not meet the standard need a vision-test report from an eye-care professional.
Road (skills) test: Demonstrates vehicle control, turns, three-point turns, intersections, lane use, backing, parallel/angle parking, and observance of traffic law (mirror/shoulder checks, signaling). Scored by accumulating error points; too many points or any dangerous action is an automatic fail. You must bring the completed MV-262 and your MV-278 (or MV-285 on file).
