Getting licensed in Alaska
Instruction Permit (Stage 1): Available to applicants between 14 and 16. Valid for two years and may be renewed only one time ($5 renewal). The applicant must pass the written knowledge and vision tests. While practicing, the permit holder must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old who has at least one year of driving experience in that type of vehicle and is seated in the front passenger seat at all times.
Provisional License (Stage 2): Available to applicants between 16 and 18. The applicant must have held the instruction (learner's) permit for at least 6 months and have completed at least 40 hours of supervised driving experience, including at least 10 hours in progressively challenging conditions (e.g., night, bad weather). Restrictions: may not carry passengers under 21 except siblings; may not drive between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed driver 21+ (licensed for that type/class of vehicle).
Full (Regular) License (Stage 3): Granted after the provisional restrictions are satisfied. A driver under 18 must hold the provisional license for the required period with a clean record (no convictions/violations in the prior 6 months) before the restrictions are lifted; restrictions otherwise end at age 18.
