About the Idaho written test
Knowledge (written) test: 40 multiple-choice questions from the Idaho Driver's Handbook. You may miss no more than 6 (i.e., 34/40 = 85% to pass) — one of the stricter thresholds in the U.S. Offered in English plus Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Korean, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Swahili, Vietnamese, and ASL. A failed test requires a 3-day wait and re-payment of the fee.
Vision screening: Required at application.
Skills (road) test: Roughly 30 minutes, beginning with a vehicle-knowledge/pre-drive safety check (including demonstrating arm signals for turning and stopping). To pass you must commit no more than 12 errors and no critical driving error. County sheriff/DMV offices and approved skills-test examiners administer tests on ITD's behalf; a 3-day wait applies after a failure.
Getting licensed in Idaho
Driver Training Permit / Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP): May be issued at 14½. To attend an approved driver-training course, an under-17 student needs a Driver Training Permit; during the class the instructor holds the permit and only allows the student to drive with the instructor. After the student passes the course, the permit is returned and becomes the Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP), used for the supervised practice period. Permit expiration: for holders 14½–17½, the permit expires five days after the 18th birthday; for holders 17½ or older, it expires 180 days from issuance. Driver Training Permits are not renewable, and fees are non-refundable.
Driver education: An approved Idaho program requires 30 hours of classroom instruction (1,800 minutes), 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving with an instructor, and 6 hours of in-car observation. Public-school courses have a minimum 30-day training period and are open to all Idaho residents 14½–21; commercial (private) schools have no minimum training period and serve anyone 14½ or older.
Supervised driving period: At least 6 calendar months of supervised driving and 50 hours of supervised practice, of which at least 10 hours must be at night. The supervising driver must be 21 or older with a valid license, must sit in the seat beside the permit holder, and no other passengers are allowed in the front seat. The SIP must be carried while driving, and all occupants must be belted. Before licensing, a parent/legal guardian signs the GDL Requirements Verification certifying the 50/10 hours and granting permission.
Class D Instruction Permit: A separate permit that requires passing the knowledge test first. Applicants 17 or older may take driver training with either the Driver Training/SIP or the Class D Instruction Permit.
