About the Michigan written test
Knowledge (written) test: For adult applicants, a written test on Michigan traffic laws, signs, and safe-driving practices (based on *What Every Driver Must Know*). For GDL teens, the written exams are administered within Segment 1 and Segment 2 driver-education courses rather than at an SOS office.
Vision / health screening: Required at Level 1 application and at licensing.
Driving skills test: Vehicle inspection + basic control maneuvers + on-road driving, given by SOS-approved third-party testing organizations. Study using the SOS *Driving Skills Test Study Guide*.
Getting licensed in Michigan
Must be supervised at all times by a parent, legal guardian, or designated licensed driver age 21+.
No cell phone use; no texting.
Level 1 expires when the teen turns 18. (If not licensed by then, the teen follows the adult 18+ process.)
Requirement before advancing: complete a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 hours at night, logged on the driving log.
