Getting licensed in Montana
Learner's License (Stage 1): Available at age 14½ for teens enrolled in or graduated from an approved traffic education course (otherwise generally age 16). The applicant must pass the knowledge and vision tests. The learner's license is valid for one year and the holder may drive only under the supervision of a licensed parent, guardian, or designated adult.
Restricted (Intermediate) License (Stage 2): Available at age 15 if traffic education is completed (otherwise 16), after holding the learner's license at least 6 months. A parent or guardian must certify at least 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night). First-year restrictions: no driving 11 p.m.–5 a.m. unless supervised by a licensed driver age 18+; for the first 6 months, no more than one non-family passenger under age 18.
Full License (Stage 3): Granted after the first-year restricted period (or at age 18), removing the curfew and passenger restrictions.
