About the Nevada written test
Knowledge (written) test: 25 multiple-choice questions, based on the Nevada Driver's Handbook (applies to both teen and adult first-time applicants, Class C non-commercial). Passing score is 80% (20 correct); the test stops early once you reach 20 correct answers or 6 incorrect answers. Time limit: 60 minutes if taken online via KnowTo Drive Nevada; no time limit if taken in person at a DMV office. Verified directly from the official Nevada DMV site (dmv.nv.gov/dltesting.htm, dmv.nv.gov/wtestteens.htm, dmv.nv.gov/wtestadult.htm), 2026-06-30 — this supersedes the previously-noted "50 questions" figure, which was inaccurate.
Vision test: Minimum acceptable vision is 20/40 in at least one eye.
Drive (skills) test: Tests vehicle control, turns, backing, lane use, signaling, and observation. Required for first-time minor license applicants.
Getting licensed in Nevada
Instruction Permit: Available at age 15½. Applicant passes a written knowledge test and vision test. The permit is valid for 1 year. The holder must always be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old with at least one year of driving experience, seated next to the driver.
Driver Education: Most drivers under 18 must complete a 30-hour driver education course (online or in person). If a course is not offered within 30 miles of the applicant's home, they may instead complete an additional 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (100 hours total).
Supervised driving log: Before the license, the teen must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (3,000 minutes), including 10 hours (600 minutes) at night/in darkness. (Teens without access to a driver-ed course complete 100 hours total.) Logged on the DMV Beginning Driver Experience Log (DLD130).
Minor (Restricted) Driver License: Available at age 16, after holding the instruction permit at least 6 months, completing driver education and the 50-hour log, and having no at-fault crashes, moving-violation convictions, or drug/alcohol convictions in the prior 6 months. Restrictions: for the first 6 months, no passengers under 18 (except immediate family); no driving between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. except for school, work, or emergencies.
