Getting licensed in Connecticut
Learner's Permit: Available at age 16. Applicant passes the knowledge and vision tests. Effective 1/1/2026, every permit applicant must first complete the free online Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course. Under-18 permit holders must complete formal training plus 40 hours of behind-the-wheel, on-the-road training, including at least 8 hours at night. The supervising/qualified trainer must be a parent, legal guardian, or DMV-qualified trainer age 20+ who has held a license for at least 4 years with no suspensions in the last 4 years, seated in the front. During the permit period the only passengers allowed are the parent/legal guardian or qualified trainer.
Parent/guardian training: Connecticut requires the parent or legal guardian of a 16- or 17-year-old to complete a 2-hour safe-driving training course along with the teen.
Permit holding period before the road test (under 18): at least 120 days if the teen completes 30 hours of classroom driver education plus 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training at a CT commercial/secondary driving school, OR at least 180 days with home/parent training ("Eight Hour Safe Driving Practices, Knowledge, and Skills" course still required). Applicants 18 or older must hold the permit only 90 days before the road test.
Provisional/Intermediate License: Granted after passing the road test — earliest at age 16 years 4 months (16 + 120 days). Passenger and curfew restrictions apply until age 18 (see Rules of the Road).
