About the Nebraska written test
Knowledge (written) test: 25 questions; you must answer 20 correctly (80%) to pass. Questions are drawn from the *Nebraska Driver's Manual*. The written test is waived for applicants who already hold a valid LPE/SCP/LPD (or one expired no more than one year).
Vision test: Required at each application stage.
Drive (road skills) test: Required for first-time applicants who have not previously held a POP. Tests vehicle control, backing, turns, signaling, lane use, and observation; bring a properly registered and insured vehicle. An applicant who fails three successive drive tests cannot reapply until they either (a) complete a DMV-approved driver-training course with at least 6 hours classroom + 6 hours behind-the-wheel, or (b) have held an LPD for at least 90 days. A drive test cannot be given in an autocycle.
Getting licensed in Nebraska
School Learner's Permit (LPE): Available at age 14 years, 1 month for students who will use a School Permit. It is the practice permit that precedes the School Permit (SCP). Requires enrollment in an approved driver-education course. Holders must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21.
School Permit (SCP): Available at age 14 years, 2 months for eligible students — generally those who live in or attend school in a community of fewer than 5,000 people (or who otherwise qualify by distance from school). It lets a student drive alone by the most direct route between home and school/school activities. Requires completing an approved driver-education course. It cannot be issued before 14 years 2 months and is a limited-purpose permit, not a general license.
Learner's Permit (LPD): Available at age 15. You may apply up to 60 days before your 15th birthday, but it will not be issued until on or after that birthday. The holder must be accompanied at all times by a licensed driver at least 21 years old seated beside them. Passing the vision and written tests is required. Valid for one year from issuance. Used to practice toward the POP or Class O license.
Provisional Operator's Permit (POP): Available at age 16. Before applying you must have held an LPE, SCP, or LPD for at least six months with fewer than three points on your record in the preceding six months, and complete a 50-hour behind-the-wheel certification (signed by a parent, guardian, or licensed driver 21+) that includes at least 10 hours at night (between sunset and sunrise). A POP holder may drive unsupervised from 6 a.m. to 12 midnight. Between midnight and 6 a.m. they may drive only to or from home and work or a school activity, unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or licensed driver 21+ (with whom they may drive at any time). Passenger rule (first 6 months): no more than one passenger who is not an immediate family member and who is under 19. All occupants must be secured in an occupant-protection system. The POP expires on the holder's 18th birthday.
