Getting licensed in Florida
Learner's License — available at age 15 (Fla. Stat. §322.1615). Applicant must complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course (also called Drug & Alcohol/DATA), pass the Class E Knowledge Exam, and pass the vision and hearing screening. The holder must at all times be accompanied by a licensed driver age 21+ in the front passenger seat. For the first 3 months after issuance, driving is limited to daylight hours only; after 3 months, driving is allowed until 10 p.m. The learner's license must be held at least 12 months or until age 18, whichever comes first (§322.05(2)(a)), and the driver must log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night (§322.05(3)).
Class E Driver License — minimum age 16 (§322.05(1)). To upgrade, the teen must have held the learner's license the required 12 months (or be 18), have a parent/guardian/responsible adult 21+ complete the Certification of Minor Driving Experience Form certifying the 50/10 hours, have no moving-violation convictions for one year from the learner's-license issue date (one violation is allowed only if adjudication was withheld), and pass the Class E Driving Skills (road) test. The test vehicle must have valid registration, proof of insurance, and pass a basic safety inspection.
Age-based curfews on the Class E license:
16 years old: may drive only between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. — outside those hours only when accompanied by a licensed driver 21+ or driving to/from work (§322.16(2)).
