About the Maine written test
Knowledge (written) test: Widely cited as 30 questions requiring 24 correct (80%) to pass; the BMV schedules the written test at the location nearest the applicant's mailing address after the application is processed. (Question count/pass threshold can change — confirm on the BMV Drivers License Exam page.)
Vision screening: Free screening given when the applicant arrives for the written exam; alternatively a doctor may complete the BMV eye-examination form in advance.
Road (skills) test: An on-road test covering vehicle control, intersections, turns, lane changes, parking maneuvers (including parallel parking and a three-point turn), and general city/highway driving. A BMV study guide and a road-test walkthrough video are available on the exam page.
Getting licensed in Maine
Learner's Permit (Stage 1): Available at age 15 (with a driver-education completion certificate for under-18 applicants). The applicant passes the written knowledge test and a vision screening (both handled through the application/exam process). A permit holder may drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver over age 20 who has held a valid license for at least two years. During the permit period the driver must log 70 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them after dark, using the Maine driving log.
Under-18 applicants must hold the permit at least 6 months before the road test.
18–20-year-olds must also hold the permit 6 months before the road test.
21 and older applicants do not have to wait six months before the road test.
